说到"旋转"，大部分人会首先想到三个单词： spin，rotate 和 revolve (用法见文末)。

除此之外，还有三个：swirl, twirl 和 whirl，它们之间的区别是难点，今天就来捋一捋。

词义：

先说说 swirl /swɜːrl/。

The fog swirled thickly around us.

我们被重重浓雾包围。

The water swirled down the drain.

水打着旋流入了下水道。

Swirl a little cream into the soup.

往汤里搅点奶油。

相关：

如上所述，swirl 常用于自然力量，如形容水，风，云等的不规则运动。

twirl 通常指身体有意识的转动，如：

twirl an umbrella：转动雨伞

twirl around in front of the mirror

在镜子前转动着身子

whirl 相当于 swirl 和 twirl，但强调速度更快或动作的突然，"飞旋，猛地转动"之意；也可指思绪混乱。

Not receiving an answer, she whirled around.

没有得到回复，她猛地转过身来。

I couldn't sleep - my mind was whirling from all that had happened.

我无法入睡，所发生的一切在脑子里转来转去。
