Bolesław "Bolek" Ostrowski passed away - the last of the paratroopers gen. Sosabowski
History has closed another chapter - Bolesław "Bolek" Ostrowski, the last living soldier 1, died at the age of 105 years. Independent Parachute Brigade, participant in the Battle of Arnhem and witness historical storms that threw him halfway across the world.
Fate didn't spare him the challenge. Born in Kresy, he had to flee Soviet occupation, but instead of freedom he fell into the hands of the Russians and was incorporated into the Red Army. He traversed through Siberia, Kazakhstan, and Africa to finally find his place in the Polish army in the West. It was with her, on 21 September 1944, that he boarded a plane to the Netherlands and jumped straight into the fire of Operation Market Garden.
Arnhem didn't bring victory, but Ostrowski survived - and for decades he returned to the Netherlands to commemorate the memory of those who stayed there. Now he's joining them himself.
