该习语中的cleft的意思是“裂开的”，整个习语的字面意思是“出于裂开的棍子中”，主要用来喻指“in a position where advance and retreat are both impossible; in a fix”，即“处于前进和后退都不可能的位置；陷入困境”，相当于汉语里的“进退两难；进退维谷；左右为难；骑虎难下”。

【闲话习语】

关于该习语的来源，一说是因为起初人们为了捕蛇，制作了一头有分叉的长棍，这样蛇被夹住后就动弹不得了；另一说是早在十六世时期，如果妇女说了别人（尤其是其丈夫）的坏话后，可能会被惩罚，戴上一种叫做branks（长舌妇上口钳，如下图）的刑具，进而无法再说话。

该习语的书面使用记录最早可追溯到1782年英国诗人威廉·考珀（William Cowber）的《Works》中：

"We are squeezed to death, between the two sides of that sort of alternative which is commonly called a cleft stick."
