The 2024 campaign season opened with a bitterly divided America and two historically unpopular candidates: former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. Though one candidate was replaced by a more popular one – Harris – the division among American voters has only sharpened – and it will likely only get worse after Tuesday.
Some of this fault lies with the Democrats, especially with the aging Biden's refusal to bow out a year or more ago, which would have generated a high-level and likely productive Democratic primary contest.
But it's really about the venom that an embittered, revenge-seeking and often unhinged Trump has spewed – from criticizing Kamala Harris' race and intelligence to saying migrants "poison the blood of our country" and threatening "a bloodbath for the country" if he loses. That's a poison that won't go away, even after the last vote is counted.
It's about much more than his policies, as devastating as most of those would be. His tariff and tax policies would reward the rich, punish the working and reignite inflation. Selling out Ukraine while catering to Russian President Vladimir Putin brings to mind shades of UK Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s blunders in the lead-up to World War II. Most of the better people who worked in Trump’s administration now say he's unfit for office, so he'd be surrounded by petty,
mean-spirited and third-rate sycophants.
Much worse, he has let us know his contempt for the rule of law. He vows to go after his political opponents, whom he calls "the enemy from within," by force if necessary. This, he says – and please believe him – includes Democrats like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Adam Schiff of California, who is running for Senate. At a rally in Arizona on Thursday, Trump said of former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, a prominent GOP hard-liner who has denounced him and endorsed Harris, “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? And let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face.”
He has threatened to use the 19th-century Insurrection Act against those who he sees as domestic "enemies," warned private business leaders who don't support him, called for suspending the Constitution and intensified vicious racist attacks against Harris.
Many have thrown around the word “fascist” to describe the 45th president from top U.S. generals, such as former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley and John Kelly, both of whom served in his administration, to noted historians like Timothy Snyder and Michael Beschloss.
The response is telling. Kelly served two years as Trump's White House chief of staff, and he has related tales of the ex-president's contempt for military sacrifices. Trump's only defense? Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a former Trump opponent who cozied up to him in an effort to earn a spot as his running mate, accuses Kelly of "lying."
Trump’s VP pick, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, claims these former high-ranking Trump administration officials turned on him because the ex-president didn't agree with them that "America should be the policeman of the world." Kelly and Cheney would have been fine with Trump if he were to "start a nuclear war with Russia," Vance contends.
Given Trump's age (78) and mental acuity – in question, as seen by his increasingly meandering, incoherent speeches – Vance could take over if the Republican ticket wins. That's not comforting. A former close associate of JD Vance who didn't want to be quoted by name described him as a "shape shifter." In this campaign, he has shown he can maneuver himself any way that Trump desires.
Then there's the "well-he-may-not-be-that-bad" crowd, who say it's unfair to call him a fascist based on his four years in office.
For those who may have forgotten – or repressed – memories from 2017 to 2021, let’s briefly review Trump’s time in office. He tried to get the Justice Department to go after politicians he considered enemies; he suggested to his defense secretary shooting those who protested against racial injustice in the summer of 2020 following George Floyd’s murder; the same defense secretary later alerted subordinates that Trump might try to use the military to seize ballot boxes to prevent his 2020 election loss; and, in what should have been his final, damning act, he became the first candidate in American history to instigate a violent insurrection to
try to overturn an honest election.
Looking at Trump’s campaign this round, it’s evident he has learned nothing and is doubling down on his authoritarian impulses, figuring there will be few, if any, guardrails this time. His threats are succeeding.
